NWHM ANNOUNCES 2020 WOMEN MAKING HISTORY AWARDS HONOREES
NWHM’s 8th Annual Women Making History Awards will take place on International Women’s Day (Sunday, March 8). Each year, the event honors a select group of people who have made a significant contribution to their field and serve as an inspiration to women everywhere. This year, the event will honor actresses and advocates ANDIE MACDOWLL and LOGAN BROWNING, as well as President and CEO of ECOS® KELLY VLAHAKIS-HANKS and Women Connect4Good, Inc. founder DR. NANCY D. We’re pleased to announce the opening of a two-year NWHM Predoctoral Fellow Award in Women’s History and Gender Studies. Applicants should have a strong interest in women’s history, public history, or gender studies and the applications of these fields outside of academia. EXPLORING “HEROISM ON THE HOMEFRONT”
Thank you to all who joined us for “How Did American Women Act? Heroism on the Homefront,” our recent collaboration with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This series explored how women’s roles changed in World War II America, and how women’s influence wasn’t limited to factory floors. Some women used their social and political positions to fight back against isolationism and sound the alarm about the plight of Europe’s Jews. A select few even put their lives at risk to organize acts of rescue. Special thanks to McClatchy, Miami Dade College, and Temple Beth Sholom (Sarasota, FL) for partnering with us on this program.
SUMMER EDUCATORS INSTITUTE
Calling all educators! Join us in Washington, D.C. on July 25 for our 2020 Summer Educators Institute, a one-day intensive workshop being held in collaboration with the George Washington University Museum and designed specifically for K-12 educators in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
The workshop will feature inspiring speakers, peer-to-peer networking opportunities, and break-out sessions with practical resources that support classroom teaching and learning on topics related to the history of woman suffrage, women’s history in the U.S., and ways to use primary sources in creative and dynamic ways to encourage further student research and civic engagement. The National Women’s History Museum is proud to partner with BOKEKI™, a woman-owned, woman-designed jewelry boutique. FEATURED BIOGRAPHY: FLORENCE LAWRENCE
In honor of our 2020 Women Making History Awards in Los Angeles, this month’s featured biography is of Florence Lawrence, one of the first motion picture stars. Throughout her career, Lawrence appeared in almost 300 films and became one of the first women to lead a U.S. film studio. In addition, Lawrence was also an inventor. While credited as the inventor of the turn signal and brake signal for automobiles, she did not patent her inventions and did not receive profits from this work.
