Among many other activities, the Navy has negotiated more robust contracts with diversity and STEM-focused groups to expand its footprint at conferences and receive a bigger return on investment in terms of prime conference placement, speaking opportunities in front of key affinity group leaders/stakeholders, and workshops for STEM groups. It positioned Navy city outreach coordinators in five of the top 10 diverse U.S. cities. They’re charged with boosting Navy awareness to targeted STEM markets. Other successes include expanding the influencer base and increasing diverse applicants to Navy commissioning programs. Through partnership with the Government Printing Office, it created a Navy comic book targeted at grades 5-8 to emphasize the importance of staying in school, studying STEM subjects and the potential career offerings in the Navy either on the military or civilian side if they continue their STEM studies in college. It won the National Association of Government Communicators 2010 Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards for excellence in government communications.
