More than a decade ago affinity groups were created to encourage like minded people and people with similar ethnicities and/or gender to engage & share their cultures within the corporate environment.  Today these groups have evolved into resource groups and networks that not only bring cultural insights into the workplace but encourage creative and innovative thinking that supports the mission of the company.  These groups develop the employees that participate in them, aiding in professional growth and pipeline development.  Equally important, the employees gain a sense of loyalty and responsibility.  What is most fascinating is that employees participate in ERGs on a volunteer basis.  Truly aligning their passion with the mission of the organization they work for.

Based on Diversity MBAs Results some interesting findings include:

  • 100% of 50 Out Front companies have executive sponsors for affinity or resource groups.
  • 60% of 50 Out Front companies measure the effectiveness of their resource groups.
  • 90% of 50 Out Front companies have African American, Hispanic and Women resource groups.
  • 55% of resource groups meet monthly to encourage engagement and connection.
  • Employees serve an average of 18 months on resource groups.
  • 40% of 50 Out Front companies engage resource groups in think tank activities.
  • 100% of 50 Out Front companies link resource groups to employee retention.

Today, employee resource groups are a critical component of any comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy.  Pam McElvane, CEO & Publisher, says,” our top ten companies are very innovative in how they engage employee resource groups and reward them for their real contributions to the business.”
