CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The American Lawyer, a leading national law magazine and the publisher of annual rankings of law firms in the United States, has named Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Charlotte partner Sabrina Conyers a 2021 Dealmaker of the Year for creating a first-of-its-kind community investment fund for Black and Latinx business owners on behalf of Invest Newark in partnership with New Jersey Community Capital.
The fund’s structure has allowed for the diversity of investment that Invest Newark required and makes the fund attractive to banks and other individual and corporate investors, thereby helping the client reach its $100 million goal to bring much needed capital into communities of color and to help close the racial wealth gap in New Jersey.
“Sabrina’s work will undoubtedly serve as a model for other municipalities, nonprofits and for-profit institutions and philanthropists to create lasting change for America’s most distressed communities,” said Nelson Mullins Managing Partner Jim Lehman.
Conyers led a team that includes Greenville partner and Financial Institutions Practice Group Leader Neil Grayson, Orlando partner Richard Coaxum, New York partner Kay Gordon, Greenville associate Jeff Gurney, and former Atlanta partner Nekia Hackworth Jones, who brought this opportunity to Nelson Mullins.
Conyers is a partnership and corporate tax attorney with more than 17 years of experience providing domestic and international tax planning, general corporate, corporate governance, private equity, and real estate finance planning and advisory services to clients.
The annual Dealmakers of the Year award honors the lawyers who advised on the most impressive and significant matters during the prior year.
