Brief: AMU Recognized for Efforts to Hire Veterans

American Public University System (APUS) has announced that American Military University (AMU) has been certified as a bronze level employer under the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) initiative, a program that supports efforts to make Virginia a model of economic development by creating a Commonwealth-wide approach to reduce veteran unemployment. Bronze-level certification is the first of three tiers achieved by organizations that make a commitment to hire and retain veteran employees for at least one year and have surpassed criteria for quality veteran hiring practices.

Headquartered in Charles Town, W. Va., APUS maintains administrative offices in Manassas, Va. A top provider of online education to service members and their families, AMU employs more than 400 veteran staff and faculty members who share the core mission and vision of educating those who serve. Over the next year, the goal is to hire 10 percent more veteran employees and to retain those employees for at least one year, according to Colonel Pete Gibbons (USA Ret), AMU senior vice president and chief administrative officer. “We are proud to have American Military University as part of the V3 team and as a Bronze Certified Employer,” said Tom Barto, V3 program manager. “As an employer and education provider for those who have served our nation in the armed forces, AMU understands the value these fine men and women can bring to the workforce.”
