Dr. Benjamin Simmons is a Family Physician and Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Medicine currently serving as faculty for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Union Family Practice. He practices full-scope Family Medicine, providing care for patients from newborns to geriatrics in both the outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. Prior to working with Union Family Practice, Dr. Simmons assisted with the establishment of the Atrium Health Urgent Care facility in Salisbury, NC. There, he provided patient care and led in development of an asthma care service and a domestic violence care program in partnership with the Rowan County, North Carolina, women’s shelter. Within Atrium he has had several leadership roles; Residency Site Director at Union Family Practice, co-chair for Equality One System Resource group and chair of the LGBTQ+ Care Council. He serves on community boards such as Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN), PFLAG Charlotte, and has led Farewell to Summer Foundation and Charlotte Trans Health. He has also served on the Board of Directors to the American Academy of Family Physicians and is board member to the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Simmons graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry, and earned his medical degree at Howard University.
