Pitney Bowes supported diversity before it was a formal term. In 1940, its then-Chairman, Walter Wheeler, resigned from a private club because of its anti-Semitic membership policy, and vowed to make the firm’s workforce representative of Stamford’s ethnic population. Two years later, he boycotted a hotel that wouldn’t register a Black salesperson, and in 1947, PB was among the first firms to support Fisk University’s Race Relations Institute. Today, PB continues to ensure that its recruitment, retention, leadership, community, and supplier diversity efforts address women and people of color. The company actively seeks relationships with minority businesses and has an internal talent management group accountable for planning/executing all diversity strategies. PB hosts an annual MBA Leadership Summit, in partnership with its local chapters of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and the National Black MBA Association. The firm also created the Prism Award, recognizing employees whose diversity leadership creates tangible benefits to the company, and hosts an annual Diversity Festival.
