Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (HBCBSNJ) have consistently made diversity, equity and inclusion a priority. They have even implemented a Pledge to uphold DEI at every level. For example, to address health care disparities related to race and the social barriers, they created Horizon Neighbors in Health, an intensive, collaborative program with community and care partners to help individuals overcome social, economic and other barrier preventing them from achieving their best health. In the realm of internal training initiatives, HCBCBSNJ developed mandatory diversity training covering inclusive leadership and cultural sensitivity for all Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Executive Vice Presidents, as well as the CEO. This was in addition to holding 65 listening sessions in which all company employees discussed issues of race, inclusion and equality, inside and outside the workplace. Furthermore, Horizon strengthened their ongoing partnership with the Newark Alliance 2020 to further Horizon’s commitment to hiring Newark residents and collaborated with the NJ African American Chamber of Commerce to generate a more diverse pool of qualified job candidates. All of this is only a small sample of the work they have done and are continuing to do.
